We are located in Alexandria, Virginia, but we have clients literally all over the United States and Canada. It should be an important part of a marketing strategy that has the acquisition of clients as its primary goal. If you are considering optimizing the website of your practice, contact Foster Web Marketing for a free legal consultation today.

If you have decided to take an active role in your website, you should be applauded. Whether you are supplementing the CMP program that you have in place or are handling all of the content updates yourself, you are taking active measures to get your site noticed by both search engines and potential clients.

But what should be mentioned is that simply loading up your website with anything that pops into your head is not the most effective or practical way to go about it, especially if your goal is to gain rankings on the search engines. What follows are some of the bigger mistakes that people make when they are adding content to their web pages.

Not Enough Content: Believe it or not, search engines aren’t looking for snazzy graphics or outstanding design. What they are looking for is text. Search engines are looking for what you are selling and where you are, and the only place that they can find that information is in the text on you website.

Wrong Page Title: The page title is what you see on the top of the browser, and there is no bigger piece of bait for search engines that having a good, succinct description of what you do. For instance if you are a DUI attorney in Milwaukee, your page title should always be “Milwaukee DUI Lawyer” or a slight variation of that. Even if the content that you wrote is about evidence procedure standards in litigation in various states, you have to remember that the average person in Milwaukee looking for a DUI attorney isn’t looking for evidence procedure standards. Always focus your title page on what your business does, regardless of what the content is about.

Bad Keyword Use: It doesn’t take much to figure out which keywords and key phrases get more traffic than others. All it takes is a little research or any one of the dozens of free keyword analysis tools. If you aren’t using your keywords properly, then all of your writing is a waste of time.

Overuse of Keywords: One aspect of search engines that a lot of people overlook is that the more keywords you use the better. In fact, it’s the opposite. If you saturate your content, not only will the syntax be garbled and cumbersome, but search engines actually ignore sites that use too many in an obvious way. It’s best to have them in title bar, in the beginning of the text, and in the midst of the text. This should happen as naturally as you can possibly make it.

Not Enough Blogging: Search engines have, as of late, been paying special attention to blogs. It’s no surprise considering that they like both new content and relevant content. With that in mind, there is no faster and easier way for you to add content with lots of relevant keywords in order to keep your rankings up.

Leaving Your Website the Same: If you’ve established a website for your business and then done nothing with it, congratulations. You’ve just spent thousands of dollars on what is now nothing more than an expensive business card. And one that you might as well leave in your desk drawer. Understand that search engines have a pretty short attention span, and are always on the lookout for something new. Once you get your site up, you will probably garner some attention from the search engines, but if you leave it the way it is and don’t add anything, your site will slip lower and lower down the rankings until it barely shows up at all. This completely defeats the purpose of having a website at all.

If you have started a website for your law firm, and you aren’t sure how to make it a vital part of expanding your practice, contact Foster Web Marketing for a free legal consultation today.
