It seems more and more difficult to find an article or blog on search engine optimization without reading some variation of how bad things are. Practically every article bemoans some new invention or Google upgrade or algorithm that, according to all these Chicken Little’s, means the end of the road as far as how search engine optimization techniques actually work.

If Google puts out a new algorithm, it’s curtains. If a new search engine comes up that uses different methods for searching, game over. If Google makes adjustments to focus more on regional results, that’s doom and gloom for the businesses that want to have a national focus. If Google makes adjustments to focus more on national results, that’s doom and gloom for the businesses that want to have a local focus. If search engines start to customize based on the personal history of the individual web user, that’s it.

Now Google has launched a program called SearchWiki, which is a search engine that allows users to edit the returns and results, with the point being to assist Google in weeding out pages that are thin, or unrelated, or just happen to show up on the rankings because they happen to have one or two insignificant things in common.

As long as we here at Foster Web Marketing have been doing search engine optimization, the one thing that we can tell you is that none of these enormous changes in the way Google works or any of the new innovations that they come up with have significantly altered the way that we do business.

In fact, many of the innovations that have been made by Google have actually made things better and easier for us and our clients. The last major tweak in 2003 actually got rid of pages with little or poor content and made it much easier for folks that were running their websites the right way to get the rankings that they deserved. And in 2005, Google made another adjustment which recognized spam blog comments, which effectively made it impossible for people to simply comment their way to the top.

Any changes that Google has made have had virtually no effect on people who are doing things the right way. You should always remember that Google is attracted to sites that constantly have fresh content, sites that use key words and key phrases, sites that have content that visitors will find useful, and sites with easily accessible pages. At Foster Web Marketing, that’s all that we do when it comes to search engine optimization.

It makes you wonder exactly what all the people who are panicking about new Google innovations are worried about. Perhaps they are worried about seeing their listings deleted or flagged by people who went to their high ranked sites but didn’t find what they were looking for. Perhaps frustrated people will be flagging or editing the link to Findlaw, which doesn’t really provide users anything but another directory to scroll through. Perhaps some Search engine optimization companies are worried that they might actually have to do some real work.

At Foster Web Marketing, we realized a long time ago that there is no quick fix for good search engine results. There is no magical formula and there are no “guarantees.” Making sure that you follow the rules and work with consistency should keep you in good standing, regardless of which upgrades and innovations that Google, Yahoo or any other search engine implements.
